Lid soft-open
Rotary damper + Coil spring
The application of rotary damper can be generally divided into two catagories:
Soft-close & soft-open.
Soft-opening lid is wildly used in products, like electric kettle, coffee machine, EV charger, Automotive interior and ect.
How to make the soft open?
Damper + Coil Spring
What kind of rotary damper is recommended in soft-open application?
There is various kind of damper.
Regarding “soft open with spring”, we prefer to recommend two-way damper (barrel damper/gear damper) than one-way damper(vane damper).
- Due to the one-direction damper (example: vane damper) interior structure, at the beginning of rotation, its damping is very low. Vane damper’s working angle is 110°,its damping from the final 80°
- In the soft-open application, at the initial of soft-open the force of spring is very big, at the same time, vane damper almost no damping at the very beginning angle. So there will be a longer free-damping travel than that with two-way rotary damper.

How to figure out the right torque of damper & spring?
As the right picture shows, the flat open along the axis when the spring exerts force on it. The graph below shows the relation among spring Force T, gravity of flat W and the resistance of rotation of damper.
FAQ:
- If using one-way damper would be better? so the Frontplate isn’t too difficult to close.
Thinking of our previous ” soft-open” case on ice-cooker, applying two-way damper 1.5kgf,cm would not be difficult to close.
- When the damper is installed, the movement is very fast at first (under-damped?), then movement stops (over-damped?)
Is there any suggestions to improve and “level out” the damping so the cover opens evenly from fully closed to fully opened?
The force of the torsion spring is decreasing and the damper can be assumed to be constant. So it is very difficult achieve evenly open. Adjusting by bigger torque + less force spring+ bigger preload angle spring, the open-movement can be as uniform as possible.
